Having began working for my parents in their very traditional jewellery store there was one thing that bothered me the most...
...the products.
I was personally tired of seeing the expected and usual pieces that every jewellery store had on every high street in every town up and down the country, there almost seemed to be no other options available.
So when the idea of starting Aspire Jewellery came we decided that we would change this, and so we meticulously brought in and carefully selected only the finest of unique and contemporary pieces from designers from all over the world.
The brief was simple when choosing jewellery from these talented designers and suppliers, contemporary, unique and big "wow" statement pieces.
As such one repeating theme came to my mind when selecting these marvellous pieces was the very natural inspiration that I was seemingly drawn to. All of our pieces then and now are inspired by nature, the sea, space, woodlands, flowers and blossoms, but there was a faint sense of irony whenever a purchase was made by a customer...
...plastic and paper waste.
Sounds silly right? I thought so too until I just couldn't shake this overwhelming sense of irony and hypocrisy. Hypocrisy through the fact that all of our jewellery pieces are inspired by the natural world yet, when a purchase was made in store and online, lots of plastic was used. I couldn't help but think "Here is your pendant inspired by the waves of the sea, oh! and by the way the the plastic that's used will end up in the sea when you throw it away..."
This used to bother me, a lot, so I decided that we would invest in more expensive packaging and postage materials that were eco friendly. All of our other packaging is 100% recyclable as we use padded cardboard bubble wrap instead of plastic along with paper tape that's safe for the environment and can be recycled.
Alongside our boxes which are made of the finest luxury paper so they too can be recycled.
Since these small changes have come into place I can sleep a lot easier knowing that the packaging I am using won't end up floating in the sea and will be recycled in the proper manner; that sense of irony and hypocrisy has dwindled.
We are still working on improving as a business in this way, constantly looking to improve and to do better
These small more expensive changes are completely worth it and reflect what Aspire Jewellery is all about, being responsible, caring not only for our customers but also caring for the planet that we take inspiration from and of which we are very much a part of.
