Are you ready for Autumn? Accessorise for Autumn guide
Summer is over, Autumn is upon us, the harvest is due and the leaves are changing and as such, we can't help but think about changing. In particular, our accessories...
Here is a very simple guide on how best to incorporate jewellery into the season and get as much wear and use as possible out of your treasured pieces.
As the cold creeps in you will find yourself reaching for your scarves, hats, and maybe even gloves depending on your geographical location... these are not helpful for showing off your jewellery.
You may even find you will be wearing less jewellery as it may become such a nuisance getting caught up in your scarves and jumpers etc when taking them on and off.
The first tip is to look to wear something that has a bit of length to it. For example a sautoir or a very long chained necklace so that, when you are taking off your jumpers and scarves the necklace, if it does get caught up in your clothes accidentally, will have the length to move with your clothes without becoming damaged or damaging the threads and fabric of your clothes either. It sounds simple, but we are often in autopilot, or tired after a long day when we get home to take off our clothes that we sometimes forget that we even have on a piece of jewellery.
And so, with the additional length of such a piece there is less risk of it becoming damaged as you will, hopefully, notice that it may be entangled or caught up when you are taking off your clothing. It is always best to avoid costly repairs where possible.
Although this tip doesn't remove the inconvenience of a piece of jewellery potentially being caught up with your clothing it will hopefully remove the risk of damage and may still allow you to wear some form of jewellery in the Autumnal season.
Another tip is to wear jewellery over the top of a jumper such as a turtle neck for example and try to wear something that is flat in design and hugs the body closely to avoid being tangled up with your clothing. Just like in the image above you can see this stunning Seven Leaf Sterling Silver Necklace is hugging the body and is still so very noticeable when being worn.
You may perhaps need to pull out your favourite woolly hat, or your trusted fedora in case it begins to rain.
Depending on your hat, you will need to choose your earrings wisely!
Stud earrings are always a safe option, all year round, as they are immensely practical for all hats and outfits. They are also less likely to be caught up with other clothing and your hair of course.
Drop earrings are more difficult but can work. We do tend to wear more drop earrings in the summer as it marries up with the idea of loose fitting clothing, a slight sense of freedom when the hot weather is upon also, so the question the becomes, how to best wear drop earrings in the Autumn?
I would suggest, choosing more substantial drop earrings that have a slightly heavier feel to them for the following reasons. Due to you needing more clothing because of the slight drop in temperature your smaller earrings may become 'lost' in your outfit and a larger pair will help to maintain the overall balance of your outfit.
The second reason is very similar to the necklace and pendant tip, the heavier the piece is the more conscious you are of it so that, when you are being active or adjusting your outfit by taking your hat and scarf off you will be more aware to not catch them due to their weight reminding you that they are there.
There is nothing worse than accidentally pulling an earring when it is in your ear! So, the heavier the drop earring the more noticeable it will be, not just to look at but as a reminder of its presence to you, therefore you are less likely to accidentally pull on it. It's the smaller earrings you forget you are wearing that get you!
The sterling silver Double Real Leaf Drop Earrings in the above image are a great example, large enough to stand out with your outfit and heavy enough to be felt when being worn
Your fingers may start to fluctuate in size in the colder periods of the season so it is always best to make sure that your rings definitely fit you and do not come off unexpectedly.
The cold weather will make your finger size slightly smaller compared to being larger in the summer months, so you are more likely to loose rings in the colder spells.
This generally happens with gloves, being removed and you may not notice your ring coming away with the glove and may risk losing your beloved ring altogether.
I would suggest double checking in this season that your rings are in fact a good size for you and look to get them sized if they come off too easily.
As for an outfit, and the need to be wearing gloves and the risk aforementioned above, I would suggest slightly smoother rings that wont get caught in gloves and perhaps a slightly wider band which covers more surface area to minimise the risk of it coming off and becoming lost. Avoid prominent rings at this time of year that are tall or have highly set stones that can easily be caught on clothing and snag.
As a suggestion, our sterling silver Organic Spinner Ring is flat in its design but still substantial to minimise the risk of becoming lost and make a statement when you have removed your gloves inside. The spinner feature also means that you will be able to hear the ring with movement so you will know it is there. And it also looks fabulous of course!
The same basic principles and tips apply here also, due to longer sleeves now being worn and coats and jackets, the slightly finer chain bracelets may become tangle and get caught up in your outfit; along with becoming lost amongst all of that clothing!
A bangle, is a solid piece, sometimes open ended or closed or sometimes with a hinge and clasp.
You will often find that these bangles when worn together can still make an impact in your outfit even with long sleeves and and gloves on due to the jangling sound they all make together, which I quite like. And once you have removed your gloves and sat down the contrast of the moving bangles on your sleeve makes the bangles look wonderful! By simply adding an Autumn pallet behind your bangles it helps them to stand out even more so.
A bracelet, is a piece of jewellery with individual links usually fastened with a clasp.
It many very well be the case also to shy away from the finer style of bracelets for the practical reasons above and look to wear a more substantial bracelet that will stand out.
Most bracelet designs are very simple, and repetitive in design as they tend to move around the wrist a lot. If you are looking for a design that is suitable for your Autumn wardrobe I would suggest a design that has some form of texture or pattern that is inspired by the season. Perhaps a non repeating pattern or motive to help break up the design and stand out.
Our Textured Mixed Swirl Bracelet is a great example. The swirls to me look like tree stump circles which you may see more of as the winter months approach and people are preparing by felling trees to make firewood.
Style
Naturally it makes a lot of sense to draw from this immensely pretty season with your jewellery. The leaves changing colour is one the highlights so why not look to have some leaf themed designs in homage to Mother Nature and the blessings she will bring.
You can also try to emulate the colours around you, lots of 'Rust' colours so rose gold or just gold jewellery pieces all work so well at this time of year!
Tips Summary
- Look to wear an item or items of jewellery that are flat to hug the body or are spherical and rounded to avoid being caught up in your clothing
- Heavier and longer pieces of jewellery make more sense in the colder periods to minimise the risk of loosing your loved items
- Double check your finger size and look to resize your rings if needed and be careful with your gloves
- Take inspiration from the changing colours of the leaves by matching your jewellery accordingly
